As most countries postal services do, the British Royal Mail regularly issue special design stamps. Just announced (and detailed on the Norvic Philatelics website) is the first of their special sets for 2010. “The Design Classics: Classic Album Covers” will appear on January 7th, and includes Pink Floyd’s Division Bell amongst the ten sleeves chosen.

Our congratulations to Roger Waters who was yesterday one of 21 top songwriters who won an ASCAP Song Award at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. He won the award for Money, which of course appeared on Pink Floyd’s 1973 album.

The ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) awards honour those writer and pubisher members of the UK’s Performing Rights Society whose repertoire is licenced by ASCAP and was among its most performed works in the US during 2008.

Other winners in the ceremony yesterday were Sir Paul McCartney, AC/DC, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, U2, and The Clash.

David Gilmour gets Honorary Degree

Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has been awarded a doctorate from the Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) in Cambridge, England. He will become an honorary doctor of the arts in a ceremony at the Cambridge Corn Exchange on 11th November 2009. The university said the award recognises his “outstanding contribution to music as a writer, performer and innovator”.

A total of 21 high achievers will be recognised in ceremonies in Cambridge and Chelmsford, the sites of Anglia Ruskin University’s two campuses. Gilmour, 63, is a former student at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT), a forerunner of ARU. He achieved worldwide fame with Pink Floyd – whose hits included the anthemic Another Brick In The Wall part 2.

Well done Mr Gilmour!

Perhaps when he has finished recording with Dr Alex Paterson of The Orb on a new album, he can go do a few lectures up and down the country!

Pink Floyd FAQRecently published (July 2009) is “Pink Floyd FAQ”, an absorbing, illuminating, and entertaining new book from respected author Stuart Shea that takes a totally different angle on Pink Floyd’s history, and the facts, figures and trivia relating to the band.

Published by Backbeat Books (part of the Hal Leonard empire), it aims to “[tell] the band’s story, dissects their most popular work, and provides little-known facts, all adding up to a provocative must-read for fans”.

Recent comments by ambient exponents The Orb’s Alex Paterson that they have been collaborating with David Gilmour are true – up to a point. David has done some recording with The Orb and producer Youth, inspired initially by the plight of Gary McKinnon (see our related stories). However, nothing is finalised, and nothing has been confirmed with regards to any structure for the recordings or firm details re: any release plans.
